While silver is something we may think of with regards to jewellery, coins and decorative silverware, it may surprise you to learn that these three categories make up for less than half of the total silver consumption. These days’ silver’s many unique properties have made it an incredibly popular material in many industrial products – for example, did you know that silver gets used in laundry detergent and wood preservation?

Silver is the best thermal and electrical conductor of all the metals and along with its malleable and ductile nature, allowing it to transform into fine sheets and stretched into thin, flexible wires, it is regarded as one of the most valuable mediums in industrial and electrical applications. Silver can also be used in the medical sphere due to its anti-microbial and non-toxic nature.

Another advantage to silver is that, because of its availability, it is considerably cheaper than the other precious metals. Silver could be pounded into powder, transformed into paste, joined with other metals, shaved into flakes, suspended as a colloid or used as a catalyst.

In recent years, we have also seen the discovery and rise of nano-silver – silver with an extremely small particle size – which has allowed the use of silver to expand into a plethora of household appliances and everyday items.

From laundry detergent to the inside of jet engines, silver has become a material of true innovation and is now appearing in many unexpected places and products. Take a look at Bullion Vault’s infographic below to find out some of the most incredible uses for silver for yourself!
