8 Entrepreneurial Families and Their Businesses Mapped Out (INFOGRAPHIC)

There is no doubt that at some point you will have come across the names Elon Musk, Ratan Tata, Kris Jenner and Donald Trump. However, have you ever wondered how many businesses these famous entrepreneurs have been involved with or owned across the years? With the recent acquisition of Fox TV and Film from Disney, we thought this would be a perfect opportunity to take a look into these families and their business ventures, and map them out in a visual piece.

Industries

The results were quite fascinating. Between just eight families, we found 788 families branching across 18 industries. These included space exploration programmes, million-dollar makeup brands, high-end clothing brands and one of the world’s largest candy stores. Did you know that the Kardashians once released a pre-paid debit card? Or that there are over 30 businesses under the Kardashian-Jenner brand alongside their reality TV show ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians?’

Before Disney’s recent acquisition hit the headlines, we established that Disney held over one hundred companies within their enterprise. This included huge entertainment brands such as Marvel, Lucasfilm (Star Wars creators), ABC (American Broadcasting Company) and the television show A&E. Now, after signing a $66 million deal, Disney will have approximately 120 businesses added to their enterprise. These include names such as The Simpsons, X-Men, National Geographic, Deadpool, Fantastic Four and more. With these alongside their other highly reputable operations Disney are now the second largest media conglomerate (just behind Comcast).

What we also found interesting was the range of industries covered within individual families, one of the most noticeable examples being the Tata family. Originating as a modest trading firm in 1868, the company grew into Tata Sons, an organisation that is involved in companies ranging from steel processing and distribution to Tetley Tea and Jaguar Motors. More recently, Ratan Tata has been an investor in the first start-up to study the medical use of cannabis. The Tata group now has over 100 companies operating under its name across six continents.

The Tata family are equally well known for their involvement in philanthropy and social responsibility. Up to 65% of Ratan Tata’s wealth goes back to philanthropy across education, rural development and medicine. The Tata and Sons conglomerate was awarded the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy in 2007. This year marks the conglomerate’s 150th anniversary.

Is there an entrepreneurial gene?

There is no doubt that there seems to be some sort of entrepreneurial gene when looking at these eight families.

We live in an entrepreneurship era. According to the Telegraph, 80 new businesses were born each hour in 2016. However, only 17% of current start-ups have a female founder.

Yet, one family which seems to be an exception to these statistics is the Kardashian-Jenner family. Despite any preconceptions you may have, there is a lot to be learned from ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’.

Kris Jenner is founder of Jenner Communications alongside her role of executive producer of the hit TV show ‘Keeping Up with The Kardashians’ and momager of her six children. She also cofounded Smooch kids clothing store with Kourtney before it closed down in 2009.

Kris’ entrepreneurial spirit has no doubt been passed down to her children. This entrepreneurial family are also fortunate enough to have a total Instagram following of 441 million to promote their various business ventures. To name just a handful of the Kardashians’ latest successful entrepreneurial ventures, Kylie’s lip kits sold out in less than 20 minutes, Kim’s emoji app broke the app store, and Khloe’s Good American Jeans launch became the biggest denim launch in apparel history. All of this, on top of signing a $150 million deal in October 2017 to extend their KUWTK contract for another 5 seasons.

Changing the world

Some of these entrepreneurs have more on their mind than making money. Many of them have entered various ventures with a mission to change the world.

Take Elon Musk for example: Musk’s entrepreneurial persona was the original inspiration for the character Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man. His career has seen him pitch his companies’ mission to colonize Mars (to the US president) and design the first ever premium all-electric Sedan. Now, Musk has decided to launch the world’s most powerful rocket with his own electric car on board in January 2018.

Musk also founded the Musk foundation with his brother Kimbal in 2002. Together, the Musk brothers support paediatric research, renewable energy research & advocacy, science and engineering education, and human space exploration research & advocacy.
